the excellent field label embarks on a new mini trilogy of eps that will -present a magical journey through modern-day trance.- first up in the series is artefakt with their three track effort the final theory. dutch producers robin koek and nick lapien make up artefakt, and between them they excel at moody voodoo music on labels like delsin. they open this latest ep with the title track, a deep, spacious house roller with subtle pads and gentle acid that perform slow motion acrobatics for nearly ten minutes. it is suspensory, dreamy music that works on the head as well as the heel. moving horizon is then less doleful and introspective but just as deep, with sweeping pads add a sense of scale, busy drums bring the dynamism and icy percussive sounds adding a sense of urgency. last but not least, solaris is a fatter, more physical groove with claps and gloopy bass, acid flashes and trancey pads all fleshing out a lush and deep electro workout. this is heavenly stuff that cannot fail to get inside your head and heart.

following up on his exceptional 12&#8243,,,, debut numb (figure 73) earlier this year, seatoc mass delivers another ep of finely tuned and highly diversified techno deep space explorations. starting on an atmospheric note, cipher’s intricate melody winchingly twists its way under your skin while airy breakbeats faintly hint at the producer’s uk roots. in contrasting fashion the bleep- driven lost lakes sticks to its metronomic stomp, making for a simple yet utterly effective tool. choral howls and detuned synths merge on transform for a gentle yet trance-inducing introduction to the flipside. emotive highlight rain then sees the manchester producer sonically recreate a thundering storm, complete with flashing strokes of lightning and a downpour of celestial scale. the breakbeat returns on closer flying buttress, albeit now at much faster tempo, exploring the common ground between futuristic grime and techno. blending all these different styles and their distinctive tropes in a coherent statement is a feat not easily accomplished. yet here seatoc mass pulls it off again, developing further the confines of both his personal and the label’s sound.

following the release on the legendary transmat records, deep a & biri are back to their home label with lightsdown. new deep techno work with two versions, reflecting the emotional versus darker side of their production scale.

ashworth concentrates on the essence of solid techno in his first full ep for made of concrete. inspired by the main component of concrete itself, the material is intitled ‘portland’ and consists of no less than four original tracks. “world” makes for a gentle introduction by opening with a soft melodic lead, swiftly changing the tempo after a few measures. we’re quickly immersed in a syncopated bassline peppered with whirring synths that harmonise with full scale piano cuts, the most intriguing earworm on the entire cut. on “launch” the producer lays down hard hitting techno drums from the get-go, setting the foundation for a tense atmosphere. ashworth’s signature move quickly ensues, as he manages to inject emotion through synths and piano pads into an otherwise tense and anxiety-ridden ambiance. toning down the graveness of the previous tracks’ mood, ”mineral” reveals a surrendering groove, with a stripped down, minimalist approach, where the melody is assembled with the help of industrial elements, emotive bleeps and electric glitches. ashworth’s experimental edge is evident in the final track “scatter” - the sub bass lead creates a morose atmosphere paired with low-key synths and mechanical loops. while the first two tracks showcase ashworth’s ability to instill life into solemn techno soundscapes, the second half of the ep successfully exhibits his edgy experimental side, adding up to a heterogenous release.

as per usual, jwb presents an ep of high quality. this time with the helping hand of t. ruggieri. one can appreciate the grand scale of sounds inside a very deep atmosphere. two great remixes as pablo inzunza (little helpers / highgrade) and gus & bonso (wrong state) tops such a fantastic release.

can t joke with dexy is the opener here and is a bumpy, edgy house cut with tense and nervy keys jangling above a roughshod drum line. it grows ever more dark and comic and things roll on before faith is a more breezy, airy house groove. the drums here dance a nimble dance, thin synths and emotive chords all come in rich layers and a lo-fi percussive line proves how frey can conjure up idiosyncratic sounds with ease. like its title suggest, ghosts is a hauntingly atmospheric track with icy hi hats, pixel thing and hugely melancholic chords and harmonic bells all adding a sense of calm and serenity to turbulent drums deep down below. lastly, scale is a sub 100bpm crawler with fat elastic synths strung up between lazy kicks. two filtered spoken word lines add plenty of weirdness to this soupy bit of cosmic seduction and round out an ep that is stuffed with fresh ideas and great sonic invention.

having recently played an eight hour set to a sold-out crowd at london’s oval space, the prolific dusky drop a trio of moody club tool tracks on 17 steps as they continue their european autumn/winter tour. a club tool in the most effective sense, lead track ’lydia’ is dark, nagging acid groover that builds and builds throughout its 6 hypnotic minutes. with all the melodic material based around the lydian scale, ‘lydia’ was originally inspired by a bizarre, trippy dream alfie had in which everything was all based on the lydian scale. a homage to classic techno, ‘bitter lake’ is a hard-hitting surge of looping, percussive energy and detroit-nodding rave stabs that build to a hoover-fuelled breakdown release. rounding off the trio, the brilliantly titled and uniquely composed ‘infinite libido’ again explores dusky’s more percussive tendencies and has been a regular feature in their dj sets for the past year.

tattoo and street artist by day, techno producer when dusk hits, the multi talented andreas andreasson aka diagenetic origin returns to sonic groove for his annual installment of heavy, deep and diligent techno. with the *golden age ep*, the berlin-based producer showcases a diverse collection of moody cuts, from the futuristic longings of the rhythmically challenging *telepathic future* to the deep cavernous percussion workout of *the awakening*. drawn out aerial melodies are both supported and shattered by andreas penchant for heavy primal drum programming, serving as a reminder of his formative years spent drumming for punk and hardcore bands in sweden. spanning the depth and breadth of the techno scale, *golden age* commands attention and adds to his consistently qualitative output on sonic groove.

released for the first time on vinyl is max richter’s emotive and minimal score to damon lindelof’s tv series about a post-apocalyptic global event where 2% of the world’s population disappears without explanation. richter’s approach explores the feelings of the protagonist’s family, the garveys, through intimate, small scale music. he tackles this psychological landscape by bringing a ritual quality to the score, while themes of departure and loss are represented by a sense of sonic decay, relying on the instrumentation of a few sustained tones on pianos, harps and celesta. max richter is a classically trained composer that defies boundaries. trained at the royal academy of music and finishing his studies under the tutelage of avant-garde composer luciano berio in florence, richter’s career has followed many paths. his musical output ranges from ballets (wayne macgregor’s infra), reinventions of classical works (vivaldi’s four seasons), collaborations with the future sound of london, roni size and vashti bunyan to writing scores for film and tv (waltz with bashir, lost and found, last days on mars) and solo work (memoryhouse, the blue notebooks, 24 postcards in full colour).

a black, very black, vinyl record which stands out compared to previous releases on limited. the sixth chapter of andrea belluzzi’s label is titled black series because its objective is to devastate the ordinary lines of techno and let loose the dark black wings which are the base of the project. on side a, mike storm and transientx4 lead us through a gradual scale of mysterious and mechanical loops capable of hypnotizing while increasing the level of pathos. this culminates the gradual build up to the third track, produced by andrea belluzzi, with a perfect balance between dark techno and ambient in a mental voyage which seems to never lose itself during the entire 7 minutes with the perfect energy for the dancefloor. the record ends with the work of ken karter which, although is strictly mental and super hypnotic, manages to offer a distinct danceable rhythm marked by low frequencies which remain slow but captivating with a wide array of sounds which grow without boring the listener.

a music maniac since his first drum lessons at the age of ten, gabriel placentra aka gab oswin has now made his dream come true and released his first vinyl, named soul ep. you will experience deep house grooves that show gabriels long-term experience as a dj in various frankfurt based clubs. as a member of the producer team molisans brothers he performed at sven väths cocoon club and the monza club and on an international scale at the rashomon club in rome. the molisans brothers also appeared on the compilation album * defected in the house*. melodically pulsating at 123 bpms track a1: new soul, represents the perfect opener for the night to come. gab has created some tunes here that inspired dj portable aka bodycode to a warm and at the same time impelling remix (track 02). b1: soul horns rounds off gabs soulful and groovy debut ep.

*the shakes* is matthew herberts first album under the name herbert since 2006s dark orchestral disco fantasy *scale* (k7!). the album deals with intensely personal issues such as raising young children against a backdrop of an increasingly unstable world and, amongst other things, utilizes the sound of used bullets and shells from ebay as part of its soundscape. herbert himself suggests that the record can be seen as a treatise on how *music helps to motivate, provide respite and divert us from the challenges of the everyday* and that it is *electronic music for the soul*.

schleissen 1 marks the beginning of a major, four-part project from stuart leath s emotional response label an in-depth exploration of the outer reaches of drone and ambient. it s a grand scheme, highlighted perfectly by the grandiose scale of serbian maverick abul mogard s opener a hypnotic, 19-minute exploration of modular drone music that s as freaky as it is beautiful. stefan schwander dons his now familiar harmonious thelonious alias on the flip, laying down two brilliantly melodious synthesizer pieces inspired by the cyclical compositions of acclaimed minimalist composer steve reich. both pieces are borderline stunning, and more than worth the admission price.

the first musical scale on apiafo leans towards raw funk with a sound similar to the famous 70s bands, l orchestre poly rythmo de cotonou and el rego. funk, is the skeletal structure of this record, and provided the opportunity for peter to invite his uncle, roger damawuzan - the famous pioneer of the 70s soul scene – on two tracks. their collaboration on *pas contente* is a highlight on this 100% analog album. apiafo was entirely recorded, mixed and mastered with old tapes and vintage instruments.

f = ma is an hard techno ep, dynamic and pressing both for side a and side b. a two-track ep that was inspired by the physics formula s second law of motion which states that the acceleration of a body is directly proportional and in the same direction of the force acting on it, while it is inversely proportional to its mass . the track on side a, entitled -massa- is a techno track, properly basic, structured on a massive scale, and that is why it was chosen as the track for side a minded for a dance floor set. a piece that starts with decision, full of body and massive , and that is why was named massa. the track on the b side, -accelerazione- is more quite, but another dance track for this great disc. a bit more slender and smooth, with broad- acceleration in a dance floor moment certainly forwarded more than the cervical part of a set, to be spent at the end to throw the disc to the latest beats.

new york endless is the first appearance on vinyl of new jersey born new yorker dan selzer. you may not have heard of him, but many of your favourite producers, bands and djs massively respect his record collection and ear. many of the sounds he has spent years exploring and djing can be heard via the three tracks that make up the strategies ep. elements of techno and house, idm, italo-disco and new wave, cosmic and kosmiche, krautrock and a certain debt to the new york school of minimalist composers all appear. the music is pure and (mostly) analog while still centred around accessible melodies and clean synthesized tones. golf channel every time!

last year accidental records released herbert complete, a 130- track boxset featuring herberts entire extensive back catalogue. it included rare and unreleased tracks from the mid 90s right up to the critically acclaimed bodily functions and scale albums. though this might have felt like the closing of the doors for matthew herberts house moniker, particularly with the ever forward-thinking producer having moved onto making music out of an exploding bomb, a shopping list, a club and even a pig, this thankfully is not the end for this side of the prolific composers output. following last months release of the 4-track ep part 6 comes the unsurprisingly titled part 7.

italian producer my dry wet mess, aka giovanni civitenga, is a name that has resonated in the world of left field/beats since its exciting fledgling years. though his father is the bass player for ennio morricones orchestra and a studio guitarist on numerous italian records, from a young age gio was drawn towards hip hop. at the age of 14 his father gave him a sampler and an atari, his beatmaking experiments grew boundless. having released albums on daedleus magical properties imprint and flying lotus brainfeeder, it is a great pleasure for fine grains to present his debut vinyl release – the *laptop lapdance ep*. it comes equipped with remixes from ikonika, dam mantle & auntie flo.

sect returns to the heart of the history once more. chicagos legacy is finally represented on the label by one of the finest producers of this city and sound, dj skull. words cant do justice to the legacy of this legend of house and techno music. for almost three decades skull has produced of some of the finest dancefloor tracks ever made, be it through saber (trax), djax, hybrid, majesty recordings, tresor, or many others. here the dark knight offers four very special cuts that reaffirm his legendary status. the title track combines the most up-to-date techno production techniques with the inimitable chicago jacking sound. *promise of peace* retrieves traditional house values on the mellower end of the musical scale, while *reboot* gets back to the straight-up techno, with some nicely understated acid elements, and finally *big girls* is informed by both reggae dub and forward thinking techno.
